Obesity Rates Soar Among US Fire-fighters

A new report suggests that levels of obesity among US fire-fighters are extremely high, exceeding those among ordinary members of the public.

The report, which has been released by the National Volunteer Fire Council, states that between 73 and 88 percent of American fire-fighters are overweight or obese, compared to roughly 66 percent in the general population. This puts them at increased risk of a range of health problems, including heart disease and high blood pressure.

The report investigates the possible reasons for these alarming figures and proposes ideas to help reverse the trend. It is available to download here.

As well as providing an overview of the practicalities of injury prevention programs, it also sets out the business incentives which they can offer organisations.

The full Injury and Illness Prevention Programs White Paper is available to view or download from the OSHA website.
